Leonberg, Germany-based pump manufacturer is striving to continuously improve the management system for workplace safety and health protection with OHSAS certification

After Lewa GmbH successfully passed the national exams of the Verwaltungs-Berufsgenossenschaft (VGB, a German association for occupational insurance) for Arbeitsschutz mit System (AMS, occupational safety with system) last year, the company has also been certified by the TÜV (German Technical Inspection Association) since early February 2015 in accordance with the internationally recognized standard OHSAS 18001:2007.

Shortly before this, proof was again provided that the Leonberg manufacturer of pumps and systems meets the quality management system requirements of ISO 9001:2008. The requirements of both management systems is to continuously improve the quality as well as the workplace safety and health protection by means of specified processes to ensure greater satisfaction with the product and the work environment for the customer and the employees.

The systematization of all activities relevant for work safety and health protection not only reduces of accident numbers, but also increases product safety and legal assurance. Lewa quality manager Sven Roser defends the step by saying, "First, this gives customers the certainty that the required aspects for workplace safety and health protection and quality are taken into consideration equally during the manufacturing and operation of our products as well as during the service calls of our employees. The implementation of the workplace safety and health protection management system is also internally monitored and evaluated, which enables the employees to perform in a continuously improved work environment." Corporate management was concerned with consistently implementing the occupational safety processes in accordance with an internationally recognized standard not least of all due to the high export share.

As part of the implementation of the workplace safety and health protection, the persons responsible defined responsibilities, performed risk and hazard assessments and implemented the resulting measures by designing processes, making investments or training the employees. To achieve the goal of continuous improvement, the team was reinforced by the officer for occupational safety, Werner Bartole.

As with ISO 9001:2008 certification, the OHSAS 18001:2007 is also subject to an annual inspection by the TÜV in the form of a monitoring audit, during which the systems are evaluated objectively by an external entity.

The company is striving to have the management system certified with respect to environmental protection before the end of this year.
